It’s Earth Day today and we are off to the sea! What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to spend time with Mother Nature herself! The seven of us chartered a boat from Fairy Point to the Black-naped Terns’s nesting site, the Loyang Rock, also known as the Squance Rock, off the coast of Changi.

This special rock has been the tern’s nesting site for many decades. Each year from April-Aug, they will lay their eggs and raise their youngs overlooking the Singapore skyline.
It’s a spectacular sight to behold, with so many graceful terns gliding all around us, it seems like it came straight out of the movies. The sun was out and skies were blue after the threatening storm clouds passed us by. It couldn’t have been a more perfect condition. The terns were undisturbed by our presense. In fact, they were more wary of the neighbouring terns who were trying to snatch their territory or mate!

The highlight of the shoot has to be the parent feeding the chick. The neighbouring residents were unforgiving and tries to snatch the food from the poor parent for themselves. The parent tern with the fish tried several attempts before the fish was finally successfully delivered to it’s hungry chicks. Survival of the fittest.

Notice how the chick blends in so perfectly into the surrounding? It’s so amazing to see these baby animals up-close (with our huge long lens), and just observing their cute little antics as they follow their parents around. I for once felt totally relaxed with a big smile on my face
Sitting at the edge of the boat, bare-footed and kicking my legs above the waters… Sun-kissed by the gorgeous sun and having a nice (and painless) tan. Perfect!
Back on land, we spotted a hard-working female Common Flameback Woodpecker hammering away on a tree top.

I’ll definately be back again very soon ![]()
