Crikey!

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

Was watching Steve Irwin’s public memorial service live from Australian zoo at 7am local time today.

I still remember how one fine Sunday morning, i woke up and had my breakfast while watching Steve Irwin in Antarctica. I remember how wonderful a sunday it was. I was totally in awe when he swam in the cold Antarctica sea with two humpback whales. It was so beautiful… you could see a rainbow as the sun shone on the water droplets created by the whale blowing water through it’s blowhole. i love that episode and really missed it…

And guess what…. right after the memorial, Steve Irwin in Antarctica episode was played on Animal Planet. I could feel my heart saying “thank you…” Something in me tells me that i WILL go to Antartica someday…

One of his pal said something about him in the memorial that i really couldn’t agree more with… It goes something like this…

And we are down to 8

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

What do you know? We now have 8 planets in our solar system…. ( Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune… ) Nope Pluto has not blow up or anything… It’s just that it’s planetary status has just been downgraded to a category know as “dwarf planet”. Who’s to blame? Eris.

“A distant, icy rock whose discovery shook up the solar system and led to Pluto’s planetary demise has been given a name: Eris. Since its discovery last year, Eris ignited a debate about what constitutes a planet. Astronomers were split over how to classify the object because there was no universal definition. Some argued it should be welcomed as the 10th planet since it was larger than Pluto, but others felt Pluto was not a full-fledged planet.
After much bickering, astronomers last month voted to shrink the solar system to eight planets, downgrading Pluto to a dwarf planet, a category that also includes Eris and the asteroid Ceres.”

Think all the textbooks and encyclopedias in the world are due for serious overhaul…

In memory of Steve Irwin

“I have no fear of losing my life. If I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it.”

“I think my path would have always gone back to or delivered me to wildlife. I think wildlife is just like a magnet, and it’s something that I can’t help.”

“I have a deep-seated respect for parrots. As gifted as I am with all other wildlife, parrots have this uncanny desire to kill me. I’m not sure why, but they’re like my kryptonite!”

“I would never blame an animal if it bit me, that is for sure, because I’m at fault, not them.”

I think it probably rained for the entire day at the North area, maybe even the whole of Singapore…
Anyway, change of plans… went to photograph the White-Throated Kingfishers instead. Supposedly the most common species of kingfisher in Singapore as they thrive well in urban areas, unlike the others who live nearer to the coast.
Thankfully, Jolene was with me, so she helped me hold the umbrella while i shoot the kingfishers. She was supposed to be shooting with me too but alas, she forgot to charged her cam batteries…
